vegetarian who eat fishWhy do so many people who eat fish call themselves vegetarian?
A vegetarian does not eat dead animals. Fish are animals. Hence, fish is not 'vegetarian' food. It's not really open to interpretation... The word means what the word means. I do not intend to criticize people who eat fish. I just would really like to know why the insistence on using the word? It certainly causes a lot of problems for vegetarians (and fish!). What's the benefit to a fish-eater of calling him- or herself a vegetarian? Thanks!
Like you said, vegetarians don't eat animals, so we don't eat fish. Many religions around the world have non-meat fasts that allow them to eat fish. I think this is the reason people get confused. I just tell them that they are a Pescetarian and not a vegetarian.

There are different levels of vegetarianism but I don't agree with them. I am NOT a vegan. I do drink cow's milk, eat other dairy products and eggs. My brother in law and cousin in law both claim to be vegetarians BUT both eat fish occasionally. I told my husband that neither are vegetarians at all. We don't call a duck a dog, so people who eat any type of once living animal (seafood included) should not refer to themselves as vegetarians. There are Vegetarians and Vegans. The end.

I cannot really justify why vegetarians would eat fish, because like you say, fish are animals and vegetarians are against eating animals. I think it is stupid for someone to eat fish and then say they are vegetarian.
All I can say is that my sister is a vegetarian, and up until a few years ago, she was happy to eat chicken (she never liked fish, but probably wouldve eaten that, too, if she wanted to). She said "vegetarians eat white meat, not red. But some dont eat any meat". hmm, right-o. I don't agree with her beliefs, but I think this goes back to religious beliefs--people were told not to eat red meat on Good Friday because red meat is a symbol of Jesus' body, so some people took it a step further and said "no red meat EVER!"
But as you know, Jesus told the story about the loaves and fish, so some people decided that it was okay to have WHITE meat because it has nothing to do with 'the body of Christ' and is not the colour of blood. Something like that, anyway.

Hell yeah. I'm planning on sleeping at 4:30 A.M. and waking up at 3:00 PM. Nothing wrong with that. You only need 9-10 hours of sleep.

I had just gotten home so i decided to take a very hot bath, so i was sitting. When i went to get out i began to come very dizzy, my vision faded to black and i could feel something in my ears,then i lost consciousness for what felt like a while. when i woke up from fainting i did not feel well. I really like to draw but whenever I show my drawings to my friends they always laugh at them, they say that is either lame or too childlish and that really hurts my feelings. I'm 13 by the way.

Obviously they have no appreciation for art in general :P Every single one of the most famous artists have been either critisized or laughed at, only because people don't understand the real meaning or the work they put in to their drawings! Take an art class or find some friends that really have the same interests as you... most likely they will love your drawings!

bible studies ice breaker questionsSo im heading a bible study tuesday and i need a little help?
So im gonna being speaking for a bible study at my college, and im trying to setup what i want to speak on but im having trouble setting it up and finding versus for my topic. I want to do the bible study on importance of reading the bible and wanted to add versus that show the truth of the bible. This study is suppose to last 1- 1.5 hours which i prefer to keep it around 1 hour.
Versus ive founded so far that i would like to use are 2 Timothy 3:14-17, hebrew 4:12, and ephesibible studies ice breaker questionsans 10-17. So can anyone possibly tell me a few other good versus for this topic and also maybe how i should set it up? I need a few Questions to ask the group during it so if you can also think of any good questions for me to ask them during that would be good. Ex. As an ice breaker i was gonna ask why its important to read the bible then i was gonna use the 3:14-17 to show why it is.

Since the questions seem to revolve around the "fact" that the earth is 6000 years old, do you ever dare ask questions in a scientific forum?

To not believe in God to them means you must have a PhD in science and be able to explain everything about the universe otherwise they will dismiss you as an idiot. By and large, the vast majority of creationist questions are posted here in R&S. If these people REALLY wanted a debate, why don't they go to a proper science forum and ask the people there? I can and would only I have no interest in those subjects. As I have no interest with car repair or pets or those fashion accessories that everyone has to rush out and buy. I've encountered one or two in the zoology section. Their questions always go to a vote because their fellows aren't there to award best answer to. However zoology is mostly students looking for homework help or people looking for identification of animals they encounter.

I have two cats which I took home from the shelter at which I volunteer. I took both home because they are great cats, but didn't have much chance of getting adopted because they are chronic sneezers. According to my vet, this is possibly due to them having infections as kittens. It is viral and so it does not respond to chronic sneezing in catsantibiotics. I have to write a 7 page essay on some philosophical viewpoint, but everything I come up with has more to do with theology than anything. ( my professors words) In this 7 pages I have to argue for and against said viewpoint. I am really needing some ideas. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not sure what advice to give you. Your professor is clearly against the idea of God. You could just please him and write an essay supporting that. Or you could just write according to your conscience and say 'screw the grade'.
On the other hand, I suspect you professor would appreciate more rigorous logic on your part. I would suggest reading some Thomas Aquinas, Saint Augustine and Saint Anselm. These are very difficult authors and it could take you years to understand everything they're saying, but just get a taste of it. They would give you some of the tools needed to argue your point in a manner that is acceptable to academics.

It is very hard not to take philosophical questions into the area of psychology, theology, etc., etc. There are plenty of topics if you know how to limitphilosophical ideas your consideration. With only seven pages you are not going to spell out any final solutions; so don't try.

(1) A classic contrast of viewpoints exists between Empiricism and Rationalism. Empiricism is the philosophy that maintains that all knowledge is gathered through sensory experience alone. The opposite of Rationalism.
For Empiricism check out Berkeley, Hume, Locke and Russell.
(2) Rationalism is the philosophy (not religion) that there are innate ideas in the mind, and not everything we know must of necessity be gathered through sensory experience.
For Rationalism check out Descartes, Spinoza and Leibniz.
(3) Now pick an idea or ideas you like from one or more persons on both sides and contrast them in your own mind. Make it personal.
It is great to be able to see things with your eyes and certainly knowledge comes this way. But, can you explain all human knowledge as the result of sensory experience alone. Was E=MC squared such a result? Can Empiricism explain this?

Ok, because of the vagueness of the assignment, it sounds as though you're expected to pick a reasonably broad, generic question, rather than one that requires trawling through hundreds of books and hours and hours of research.
Sounds like you're supposed to demonstrate the ability to see both sides of an argument, present them fairly and analyse them critically. Off the top of my head, the best subject to tackle is the debate over whether ethics is subjective. You can frame your argument in terms of a particular question - I'd call the essay something like:
- What does it mean when we say "Murder is wrong"?
You then go on to discuss whether it comes down to a feeling or subjective opinion that murder is wrong, or whether "Murder is wrong" is a /fact/ in some sense (and if so, what sense?). Most Christians, for example, believe that it is /true/ that murder is wrong, while your average atheist tends not to (clearly, atheists still think murder is a bad idea, but for different reasons!)
Religion would probably come into this topic, but there's no reason why your professor should accuse you of writing a theological essay, so long as you present critical arguments for both sides of the question.
If you want to do some research (and it's probably a good idea to do a bit) any philosophical text book or introduction to ethics will contain reams of stuff on this subject.

why vegans don't eat eggsWhy don't vegans eat eggs?
Okay now i'm asking this with the greatest respect, because i really respect vegans and i would be fully vegan if i truly believed that what i'm eating has caused pain or suffering to animals; but i don't understand why vegans don't eat eggs? I mean the battery produced eggs, that reason is obvious. I will only eat what i believe to be free range eggs and drink free range milk. But if you knew the egg was completely free range, like a chicken had laid it and it was living in comfortable and acceptable conditions why wouldn't you eat it? And don't say "Because its come from an animal." I know what a vegan is.
I only want answers from vegans or people who know the reason.
No stupid answers please.
Here's where I believe the reasoning comes from: we shouldn't infringe on what other creatures produce for their own survival. Bees make honey to feed their larvae. Cow's produce milk to feed their young. Hens lay eggs to produce young. Even if you're buying organic milk and eggs, you're still taking from those animals. It takes a lot of energy for them to make those products and we just take from them. Also, our agricultural practices (even organic, free range ones) involve keeping the animals in unnatural states. For example, keeping a cow lactating for as long as possible in order to maximize milk profits.
That being said, I contemplated becoming vegan, but I really love cheese, yogurt, eggs and fish so much! Like you, I always choose the organic, free range products, and I think that is a positive step. If we all made changes like that in our diets, we'd make some real progress in how humans treat other species.
Hey Claire, If you have hens that you care for and love dearly -- there is no cruelty as I see it. If you want to eat their unfertilized eggs, I think they would happily give them to you and there would be nothing cruel or wrong with that. No Cages + No Killing + Love = OK :o)

I'm a vegetarian, not a vegan. That being said, Vegans take vegetarianism one step further, and will not eat any item that is made from the flesh or is produced from an animal.
They don't wear leather or suede they don't buy down pillows, they don't eat meat, they don't eat eggs, they don't eat yogurt, gravy.
There are various reasons for this: obviously, they don't want to eat animals. They also don't want to eat the products that animals give for their babies. Furthermore, they don't want any animals to suffer for the Vegan's own benefit of consumption of food. They don't want to eat products that could have been a viable baby animal.
The ironic part, though, and I know this because I know lots of Vegans-- is that many vegans are also pro-choice in dealing with the subject of abortion. So they argue against killing viable baby animals, but say nothing against aborting viable baby humans.
There is enormous cruelty involved in producing eggs from "free range" hens as well. Have you ever thought about what happens to the chicks born to lay eggs that aren't hens (females)??? They arewhy vegans don't eat eggs either crushed alive or stuffed in garbage bags to suffocate or otherwise "disposed of." They are not raised to be eaten -- they are not the right kind of chickens. The brutal truth is -- they are killed without any regard to the pain they must suffer dying. Not the slightest bit of compassion is shown to these little living creatures that are the unfortunate unwanted product of the egg industry -- "free range" or not.
Free-Range, by definition, means that the animal runs free, is not caged, and basically does what he/she would do in nature. But, the fact of the matter is, the animal has to be let out of it's cage, or other source of confinement for only about 20-30 minutes per day, in order to legally be termed Free-Range. Vegans don't adhere to any of the claims, because they don't know who's making the claim, and the margin of error is too high for them to take the chance.

Most products with eggs in are non free range. (battery farming is barbaric) So even if ate eggs and only bought free range for myself could not always guarantee the source so better to just cut them out completely.
When I use to buy free range eggs did actually get some with red blood spots in the centre so that meant they were fertillized and were basically chicken embryo - which cant be vegetarian
Except for california, who just passed a law saying cages must be big enough for the animal to stand up,turn around,and fully extend limbs or wings, most factory farmed hens are treated horribly, cramped in tiny cages, and many have their beaks chopped off. Plus eggs, have a lot of cholesterol.
Free range does not equal cruelty free.

If I raised my own chickens and they were happy and naturally produced eggs then I may decide to eat eggs again, but there isn't a need really.

The point about eggs is really more general than your specific example (which I'd have no problem with), in that even in free-range farming roughly equal numbers of hens and roosters will be born, but the roosters aren't profitable (don't lay eggs of course) so most are slaughtered. Thus, although the eggs themselves don't involve cruelty, the means by which they're farmed economically inevitably involve the death of many animals.
